Q: my iMac ate my bookmark list. it left me with a smaller abbreviated one that doesn't have anything I use. it did this on my personal MacBook Pro too. I need these book marks for work!!

iMac used for work ... macbook pro for personal use. This weekend I noticed bookmark list on macbook had been reduced to almost nothing and none of what was there was anything I normally used. Come in to work this morning and same bookmark list is on my work computer. all the book marks I use for work are gone. How do I go about trying to find my bookmark list. I did not do any editing of the list or anything like that. Is this iCloud related. Honestly I try not iCloud everything. keep in mind I suck at all things computer related.

Use your Time Machine backup to restore the bookmarks. Here are the instructions:

Safari bookmarks are all stored in a file called Bookmarks.plist, which is located at ~/Library/Safari/. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Safari folder.

Once you have located the file in Time Machine (you have to go back to a time when you knew you had them), click it and restore.

BTW, OS X will not eat bookmarks. Either you or another user on your computer did something to lose them. By chance to you run any antivirus or cleaning apps on your computer? If so, that could be your issue.

    Thanks for the reply!!

Unfortunately no library folder shows up when I click home?? I have never messed with time machine and don't know anything about it. It was  never set it up if it needs to be set up. would this be the reason for no library folder? Did not run any anti virus. Technically I should be the only person on the computer .. and I did not purposely mess with anything, which if I had I would figured I messed something up. Instead it was turn on computer and ... "what the **** .. now what!"

Do you backup your computer at all, if not then a) please begin doing so immediately. Apple pre-installs Time Machine onto your computer in order for you to backup, all you need to supply is an external HD. You can learn about TM at Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

If you have not been backing up your computer then your book marks are likely gone.

You can still look for your bookmarks by doing the following.

    1. Open a Finder Window
    2. In Finder type: Shift+Command+G and paste: ~/Library/Safari/ and hit Enter
    3. Look to see if your Bookmarks.plist files is there

Time Machine is not on ... However I did manage to find the library and bookmark plist. right click does not reveal a restore option. if you open the plist you get what I am assuming is code ... lots of it. Is it possible to still restore from where ever this file is located?? I wouldn't know how to check but could this machine be backed up to iCloud. someone who set it up may have it doing automatic back ups??

thanks for the replies so far!!

Well, iCloud isn't a backup system so I suspect you have lost your bookmarks. This is going to be a lesson on why having a sound backup plan is crtitical. Consider yourself lucky to only have lost bookmarks, it could have been much worse, you could have lost irreplaceable data files, financial records, your photo library and the list goes on.

I would recommend that you immediately buy an external HD and begin using Time Machine. If you are interested the EHD I recommend is the OWC Mercury Elite Pro line. Excellent quality at affordable prices. You can shop for one at :https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB

If you don't want one of those, any external HD will work.
