Yes, you can update iPhone 5s to the latest iOS 9.3.5 (30th August 2018)

Aug 29, 2016 5:38 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby lbimim,Yes, he was set up with an Apple ID at the Verizon store when we activated the phone. Unfortunately, they didn't update the ios. I've heard that jumping 2 levels (7.1.2 to 9.3.5) can result in bricking the phone.
