Q: ios upgrade

My daughter gave my husband her old iPhone 5S, which is still running 7.1.2. Is it safe to upgrade it to 9.3.5 or will that brick it? TIA!

It's safe. Tap Settings > General > Software Update (via Wi-Fi) or update using iTunes > Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

It will be necessary to change the Apple ID from your daughter's to your husband's.

Yes, you can update iPhone 5s to the latest iOS 9.3.5 (30th August 2018)

Yes, he was set up with an Apple ID at the Verizon store when we activated the phone. Unfortunately, they didn't update the ios. I've heard that jumping 2 levels (7.1.2 to 9.3.5) can result in bricking the phone.

Daughter did all that before passing the phone along. Husband has his own Apple ID, set up at the Verizon store. I'm just concerned about the 2 level ios jump, heard that can have disastrous results.

With iPhone connected and selected in computer iTunes (version 12.4.3 or later, if iTunes version is earlier then you need to update iTunes first) and update from there.
