Q: BAD SOUND/ CALL QUALITY

I have a brand new iphone SE it is iOS 9.3.5
when i make or receive a phone call sounds like the person i'm talking to is in a can. i have the volume on full and can hardly hear them. it is much better on handsfree or when earphones are used.

Is this right or is something wrong?
