Q: No internet ethernet cord to connect to Airport Extreme.

I recently moved from an apartment with an ethernet connection to the provided internet into a new apartment where internet is provided wirelessly. In my old apartment, I had decided to buy an AirPort Extreme to act both as my wireless router and my backup for my MacBook. Now that I've moved, I can't figure out how to incorporate my AirPort Extreme without an ethernet cable. Basically, I just want to be able to have my computer automatically back up again and not inappropriately sign into my old wireless network that no longer has ethernet connected internet.

AirPort Extreme, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You connect an Ethernet cable between the World Ethernet port on the AEBS and the cable/DSL modem's Ethernet port. Connect another Ethernet cable from the computer's Ethernet port to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS. If the modem supplies a Wi-Fi connection, then you can turn that off in the AEBS.

If  your AirPort Extreme has a built in hard drive, you actually have an AirPort Time Capsule.  Otherwise, it is possible that you may have an AirPort Extreme and then use a separate USB hard drive which is plugged into the AirPort Extreme for backups.

Either way, an Ethernet connection is going to be required for Internet access.

One possible solution might be to add an AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that the apartment complex provides, and then connect an Ethernet cable from the Express to the AirPort Extreme.  In effect, the AirPort Express would act like a special wireless to Ethernet "modem" to provide a wired Ethernet connection.....which the AirPort Extreme requires.

An advantage of this approach would be that you can use the AirPort Extreme just as you did before to set up your own private wireless network in your apartment.

Another possible solution might be that the apartment complex might offer a wireless-to-Ethernet "bridge" device (which would perform the same task as an AirPort Express) for their clients who need a wired Ethernet connection.  Ask the apartment management about that possibility.

Hi Kappy.  I think you missed the part about the OP not having a wired Ethernet Internet connection available at all.....to connect to the modem that you suggest.

The apartment only supplies wireless......no wired connections are available.
