Q: iPhotos places map query

Hi. I am using OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 and elected to stay with iPhoto rather than move to Photos.

What I am trying to work out how to do is view markers on the places map that are only from specific photos (ie a holiday). I dont mean the little preview map on the bottom right - I want to be able to take a screen shot of a full screen sized map.

I tried flagging the relevant photos then clicking on the places map while in the flagged folder but it shows every photo marker I have ever taken.

Does anyone know the trick to getting the map to show only specified markers ?

Thanks in advance.

You can restrict the map to certain places, using the drop down menues at the top of the Places map:

Another way would be to create a photo book with just a map page showing the pins for the selected photos and then print this page as a pdf file. That wil give the map in a better resolution as a screenshot:

    Hi leonie

Thanks for those two suggestions. I have been having a play with both to see what works.

With the places menu I found that I needed one more drop down box - being the date.

To explain further about what I am trying to do - I just had a week on a tiny island and we drove all over the island each day. In Places I can zoom in and get a great close up of the island and all the pinpoints for that whole week.

What I now want to do is drill down further to see just the pinpoints for Monday, then Tuesday etc. So I can make a separate map for each day. (Mainly to work out where I was as I was so disoriented the whole time !!)

    Thats where I am struggling.

I hadnt used a photo book before so I tried your suggestion - I flagged all the photos and then selected to create a photo book from the flagged ones. It gives me a map page - but it only shows a single pinpoint. Nothing else. So I am a bit lost as to what step I may have missed here. Any extra directions would be much appreciated

    Thanks again

    from little confused me !!

    HI KT68,

I have been travelling for a few weeks and did not see your follow-up question, sorry.

What I now want to do is drill down further to see just the pinpoints for Monday, then Tuesday etc. So I can make a separate map for each day. (Mainly to work out where I was as I was so disoriented the whole time !!)

That is not as easy in iPhoto as Aperture.

I see two options to create maps only for specific days.

    1. If you hide photos, they  will be excluded from the Places map, if you disable "View > Hidden Photos". So you could create a smart album with a Date rule "Date is not ...." and hide all photos that have not been taken on that day.  You can hide photos with the command ⌘L.  Now look at the places map. When done, unhide the photos again.
    2. A brute force approach would be to export the photos for the specific days and import them into a new iPhoto Library just for one day. Then the map would be restricted to the subset of photos for that day.

    Hi léonie

Hope you enjoyed your travels. Oddly enough this morning I was just wondering if this

    <<<

    might be the solution!!

I will try both 1 and 2 but I think number 2 may be the winner - thanks so much for thinking it through for me. I will create a new library just for map making!!!

You are a gem - many thanks !!
