Q: anti-virus

Currently using Intego Anti-Virus program on my 5 year old iMac. Never had a notification regarding an existing/invading virus so don't know if it's actually effective. Does anyone have any recommendations for an effective either unpaid or paid anti-virus program? I've read about Avast/Sophos, etc on several websites but would like user feedback. Using updated version of El Capitan OS.

There's no virus in the wild that can run on Mac.

Update your OS X to the latest 10.11.6 El Capitan.

Your Mac is much better off without any third party anti virus software installed. It's not necessary.

With El Capitan installed your Mac has System Integrity Protection > About System Integrity Protection on your Mac - Apple Support

But isn't it a myth that Apples can't be
affected by viruses - or is it viri?

OS X is a solid platform and can take care of itself.
Do not install paid apps that are "free", only download from trusted source.
Apps only directly from the developers' websites.
Don't install cleaners, keepers, optimisers, etc., or apps that promises snake-oil remedy.
