Q: I can't put a disc into my optical drive.
Hello there,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and over the last 6 years I have rarely used the optical drive. Recently I tried to put in a disc but it wouldn't even go in. I have no idea why that would be.
Any help or advice much appreciated !!
Regards
MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Some slot-loading drives used in Apple computers have a fail-safe device to prevent you from inserting a disk in a failed optical drive. A metal bar activates to physically block the insertion of media.
If you shine a light into the disk slot, can you see a piece of metal blocking the way? If so, the drive has failed.
Apple considers your 2010 MacBook Pro "vintage" or "obsolete" and can refuse to look at it. However you can ask, as the policy can vary with local regulations. If you live a long way from an Apple Store, call before setting forth. Tell them you have a 2010 model, and ask if they are willing to look at it. No sense driving for hours to hear "no" in person instead of over the phone.
Although they may look at it, I am rather sure they will not offer to repair it. Please see this Apple article for their view of vintage and obsolete:

You may be able to replace the drive at home if you can get a working one. Instructions here;

If you let us know roughly where in the world you are, we can help you look for replacement drives. I'm assuming "Billabong" in your user name is a clue to your location?
