I can't add m4r files to itunes. - https://discussions.apple.com/message/22240099 - largely a matter of people not realizing when you add a file to iTunes it puts a copy of the file in the iTunes folder and uses that, not the original file.

Aug 30, 2016 8:08 AM in response to Limnosby DMacJo,★HelpfulHi Limnos,
Thank you for your responce. I have followed all the steps that you suggest and it all goes very well, until I try to import the m4r file into the Tones folder. It does not work. I have tried holding down 'option' as I click and drag, but that doesn't work either. My Tones folder wont allow anything to be put in it! Any idea why?
When I first made the ringtone, it said under 'get info' that it was a ringtone file, but now it has changed from being a 'ringtone' file to being just a 'music' file, and there is no menu option to change it back to a ringtone.
Any suggestions would be great! I have spent hours on this already. How can Apple make this stuff so complicated? It all worked fine before - why change it?
Thanks again!

Aug 30, 2016 8:02 AM in response to DMacJoby Limnos,Do not drag files to the tones folder. Add files to iTunes by dragging to the iTunes window. You should still be able to drag items to that folder. If you cannot it is possible folder is locked or permissions are set to read only.

Ok, thank you. Where do I reset the permissions?

Note that dragging a media file to an iTunes media folder does not add it to iTunes. iTunes does not search those folders for what is in there, it assumes it knows what is in there because you have added it to the iTunes window or deleted it in the application itself.

Aug 30, 2016 8:32 AM in response to Limnosby DMacJo,Thank you, for your reply and for persisting! I have checked all the settings, so they all say read and write. It is in the iTunes music folder fine, but I still can't get it into the tones folder!! It just bounces out every time.

Aug 30, 2016 8:43 AM in response to DMacJoby Limnos,As I said, you really should not be putting it in the tones folder yourself in Finder. iTunes should be doing all that after you add it to the iTunes application. Again, adding them in Finder will not get them to appear in iTunes. Most people should never be looking inside the iTunes folder in Finder.
I have zero ringtones and I use iTunes 7.5 so I can't experiment with this firsthand, sorry. It may be ringtone management has changed since most of the articles I linked date from 2010.

Aug 30, 2016 8:47 AM in response to Limnosby DMacJo,Yes, I have always made my ringtones before, and I have never had this problem. It has only occurred since I updated last week. Hopefully Apple will sort this out! Thank you for trying.
