Hil

Unplug your iPod from your computer.
Make sure that your computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Put your iPod in Disk Mode.
Connect your iPod to your computer again.
Restore your iPod.

Disk mode did not work. I got the Apple logo but when I held down the play/pause and center button, it went back to the red X. iTunes is top-to-date but does not recognize the iPad when connected.

If the iPod won't get passed the "red X" when doing Reset or Disk Mode, the most likely cause is a faulty hard drive in the iPod. Most broken iPods (with hard drive for storage) are broken because of the hard drive.

NOTE: If the hard drive is faulty, there are now more options for replacing it, such as using commonly available flash-based storage in the form of compact flash card or SD card (on an adapter). This web site has relevant information
