Q: Have a MAC AIR and adapter sometimes will be very hot to the touch when plugged into electrical outlet. Is this okay? It does not happen every time.

A degree of heat is normal, but not being able to judge the amount your device is producing is not going to help you.
in the mean time plug your adapter directly into the wall socket, and if you are using a the elongated cable with the 3 pronged plug into a two pronged outlet with an adapter use another outlet with 3 dedicated plugs assuming you are in North America.
If the adapter harmfully hot contact Apple using the link at the bottom of this page.
