You might want to give this a try for the button responsiveness issue. I know that you need the button to do this, but give it a try.
Try a forced restart. No data is lost with this procedure. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If the device still will not hold a charge, you should make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask them to evaluate the device for you.

If the battery runs very low, it can take a number of hours for it to recharge. You can try leaving it plugged in overnight and see if it will recharge.
