Q: Problems logging in to websites

I have a 21.5-inch, late 2009 iMAC, processor 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Dou, with 4 GB memory, 1067 MHz DDR3. The operating system is OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6.

My iMAC has stopped letting me log in to websites using usernames and passwords. This included a new website that had only recently been launched, with username and password supplied to members like myself, as well as previously used websites I have access to by using username and password.

I tried emptying cookies and cache for these then emptying them entirely from my computer to no avail. My Safari settings allow cookies and website data from websites I visit. I do not know what next to do.

    Try:

    1. Open Safari
    2. Click "Safari" menu > "Preferences..." > "Extensions"
    3. Click on each extension name on the left sidebar
    4. For each extension that you absolutely must have, un-check the "Enable 'extension name'" check box
    5. For all other extensions, click the "Uninstall" button
    6. At this point all extensions that remain should be disabled
    7. Click "Safari" menu > "Preferences..." > "Security"
    8. Un-check the "Allow Plug-ins" check box
    9. Click "Safari" menu > "Preferences..." > "Privacy"
    10. Click "Remove All Web Data"
    11. Then shut down Safari, reopen it, and test logging in on a major website

Let us know the results.  If you are able to login to a major website then you problem was likely a plugin or extension and you can then reenable them one at a time to find the culprit.

If you have installed any third party apps that claim to protect, manage, clean, boost performance, etc. uninstall these apps.

I've tried the two options suggested without solving the problem. However the problem seems to be with getting into new websites, in particular two local websites one for University of Glasgow for which I had to get new password, and one a local group for Probus that has just launched a verified website and this was my first attempt. It therefore seems to be access attempts using new unused passwords /usernames. The former states my password (which they had just provided by emailing it to me) had expired and the latter states I have not entered the correct username. Apologies for not being clearer before.

Those clearly sound like problems with your username and passwords on those particular websites.  Use the features of those websites to first determine your correct username and then reset you password.
