Q: Full wifi, but no internet?

Hi everyone! I am currently using another computer to post this question in a desperate attempt to fix my Late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15".

My current issue is that it displays full wifi bars in the indicator on the status bar, but I have no internet at all. I went into Network and clicked Assist Me, then Diagnostics. The connection drops intermittently as it pleases, but the wifi symol remains at full strength. As I go through the steps, the ISP, Internet, and Server will go from green to red, sometimes the Network Settings will turn red momentarily also. What should I do? I need the knowledge of my fellow apple users and techs.

Note: All other devices on the home wifi function normally.

Thanks,

Chase

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

        Restart the computer.

        Start up in Safe Mode.

        https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760?locale=en_US

    2. Deselect Proxies if selected.

System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab

Unlock the lock if you have to.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if check marked.

        Click "OK" then  "Apply”.

    Hey dominic23,

Thanks for the help, but my problem is still persisting. I checked the proxies and there are none enabled. I have internet in safe mode, so what is the next step you think I should take? I checked my DNA trough terminal and it said it spewed out the proper info and ip. I also tried to using a freshly made account to no avail. All help is appreciated

Since you have access to the internet in Safe Mode, there must some software you have that is causing the connection problems. Run Etrecheck and post its report here.

Try uninstalling the Cisco software using the developer's uninstall instructions. i would also uninstall the Torrent software. That is how you get junk downloaded to your computer.

You have a sysctl.conf file which is not needed. The likely reason it exists is something you installed also configured it to "optimize" network settings. It might have been done by the AnyConnect software, but I don't know. I don't know what else would mess with that file.

I also do not know if it would cause the problems you are having.

As already mentioned, I would suspect AnyConnect.

You can get to the folder where it is located by using Go To Folder in the Go menu in Finder.

Type /etc into the path field and click Go.

The file is not needed, so you can just delete it. If you're worried, copy it to your desktop, then delete the one in the /etc folder. Restart and test.

I am sorry if I am pointing out the obvious here: did you erase the drive, install El Capitan and immediately test the issue? The reason I ask is because some people do a clean install followed immediately by Migration Assistant, which in case of problems is likely to bring back whatever was causing them in the first place.

To answer your original question, a Wi-Fi signal just means you are connected to the network, but not that you have connectivity to the Internet.

The debugging information given so far seems to be the right route to finding out what's up.

I did not use migration assistant, I start from scratch when I clean install. So what should I do next?

I would carefully look into System Preferences->Network-Wifi and compare all the settings with the ones on machines that do work - particularly the DNS settings.
