Q: dvd player doesn't work in 10.11.6 for my iMac  Suddenly.

It goes in but it doesn't appear on the desktop. It whirrs around several times and then pops out.  I tried downloading VLC, tried making Library visible and deleting dvd cache, and looked for way to tell the computer to use another app to open DVDs.  Strange thing, I don't see Cds & Dvds in Preferences folder....   I don't see a link for downloading the App that comes with the MAC.

  HELP--> please and thanks

** none of the categories seem appropriate, but it is an issue of updating the computer OS, I think.

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    The drive itself may be bad. DVD drives have two lasers. One for reading DVDs, and other for CDs. So try putting in a music CD, or any other CD you have. If those appear on the desktop, but no DVD of any kind will, the laser for DVDs has gone out.

    That's just looking at it from the hardware side. That the CDs & DVDs pane appears to be missing from the System Preferences also suggests software may be problem. For that, I would first make a full backup of the drive, then reinstall the OS.

    Just to add, it may also be dirty. There are various posts on how to clean a drive lens.
