Aug 30, 2016 2:35 PM in response to Tesseraxby a4738918,Not sure, it says "Relevant Parts MacBook Pro 17 Unibody (Early and Mid 2011) Replacement Battery, MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Early/Mid 2009) Battery"
There's also a post in comments by Remon - 11/28/2014:
"Very important note; this guide is NOT correct for the Macbook Pro 17" A1297 late '11."

Aug 30, 2016 2:35 PM in response to a4738918by Tesserax,The other (& better) option is to have Apple replace the battery for you.

Aug 30, 2016 2:50 PM in response to a4738918by Tesserax,We are all users of Apple products like you. I suggest that you contact Apple Support directly to get the part number ... or open it up and see what the labeling on the battery says.

Aug 30, 2016 3:24 PM in response to a4738918by Tesserax,Great! Thanks for sharing that with us. I'm sure others will benefit knowing the Apple part number if they plan on replacing the battery themselves.

Aug 31, 2016 6:32 AM in response to Tesseraxby a4738918,Don't thank me, yet...
I'm getting conflicting info that I'm still trying to confirm but will keep updating here. Others are telling me 661-5960 is the...
"part number if you look at the part list in Apple's system for certified techs. At least that's the format for it..."
I've also heard...
"A1383. You can also search for BAP17MBU95W if you're having trouble. The A1383 is the OEM part number, though."

Aug 31, 2016 7:54 AM in response to a4738918by OGELTHORPE,Understand that getting the Apple battery part number may not do you any good because Apple will not sell you the battery for you to install it. Any third party may or may not use the Apple part number and if they do, it does not follow that the battery is identical to the one that Apple uses.
Ciao.

Aug 31, 2016 9:56 AM in response to OGELTHORPEby a4738918,Cool, thanks! Correct me, if I'm wrong but after more research on: "661-5960", "A1383" and "BAP17MBU95W", I've found the following:
1) Apple.com store gave no relevant results for any of the three numbers.
2) It appears that both "661-5960" and "A1383" are used on 3rd party sites to describe the "Apple Part Number" of an "OEM" and/or "Original Apple Replacement" battery for a late 2011 MBP 17" HOWEVER, they also have a "Manufacturer's Part Number", which is different and I'm GUESSING not Apple.
3) It appears that "BAP17MBU95W" is aftermarket made by NuPower and available @ OWC and others.

Aug 31, 2016 10:24 AM in response to a4738918by OGELTHORPE,On points 1 and 2 I tend to agree with you. Regarding point 3, I installed a NuPower battery from OWC about a year ago and it is providing satisfactory service. It is in my 2010 17" MBP. I do not know the part number, but that is probably not relevant.
Ciao.
Addendum: Anker batteries have been found to be good third party replacements by several veteran ASC participants.

Aug 31, 2016 12:37 PM in response to OGELTHORPEby a4738918,The reason I'm researching the battery for my late 2011 MBP 17 is because I had a "Video failure of the AMD Graphics Processor Unit (GPU)" diagnosed ar local Apple store. Good news, Apple will replace the logic board ($579) for free under the "MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues". Bad news, they said I also need a new battery ($179) but it's not covered.
That being said, "BAP17MBU95W" is the aftermarket made by NuPower and currently available from OWC on MacSales dot com for $99.75. Having your satisfactory experience with the NuPower battery from OWC for about a year, which would you recommend; OEM installed by Apple for $179 or DIY install a Nupower from OWC for $99.75?

Sep 2, 2016 11:57 AM in response to a4738918by OGELTHORPE,★HelpfulI probably would opt for the NuPower from OWC, due to price difference being the primary reason.
Note that OWC provided with my battery with the necessary Triwing and Phillips drivers for the installation.
Should you choose to install it your self, be careful disconnecting/connecting the battery. Do not short circuit the pins in the connecting plug. If you do, you may need more than just a replacement battery.
Ciao.

FWIW, OWC website says Triwing and Phillips drivers necessary for the installation are included.
