Q: I was on Google Chrome and on a web site and suddenly got a message that blocked Chrome completely. Does anybody know what is rundll.32exe?
My Google Chrome suddenly stopped working and I got a message from zz-mcure.in telling me that my Apple computer has been blocked and to call Apple at 1-855-686-7867 to restore my computer. I did not think it was a legitimate number so did not call. I cannot quit Google Chrome nor can I shut down my computer. Everything is frozen. However, I am able to log into other programs as well as Safari. Perhaps I got a virus even though I am running Avast and it did not pick it up. Can anyone help with this problem?
Thanks,
Anthony

rundll32.exe is a Windows dynamic link library and an interregnal part of Windows XP through 10, and is historically one of the more popular Windows components that Windows virus try to replace or alter. This file is effectively gibberish on Mac OS X so even if you have an "infected" version it would not do anything on a mac other than be ignored.
The scam however does not do anything to this file on windows computers, it throws up a pop up saying the file was detected as having a virus, it might as well be saying the file has diarrhea, the hiccups, and wants to take your kids for a ride on its motorcycle without helmets. They can say whatever they want, it's a pop-up ad with phony info.
