Q: macbook pro early 2011 13 inch keeps freezing immediately after the fan kicks in at full speed

I'm not sure if this is related to the other "freeze" questions because nothing happens to my screen.

I upgraded my RAM from 4gb to 8gb with the appropriate specs to resolve slow speed; this helped a little but not completely. The program icon in the dock used to bounce about 10 times before the balloon showed up and then it was another 10 seconds after that the program would load. Now, it bounces about 3-5 times, no balloon, then 3 seconds to program screen.

Then, I recently replaced the battery with a compatible one that came highly recommended because I noticed that the battery was draining after 2 hours of use, sometimes less. This did nothing; I know about closing programs and dimming my lights to help preserve battery life. I have one particular program called SafeConnect that I need to access my schools network. This program is fickle with CPU usage, memory usage, and energy impact; meaning that it spikes and drops to the extreme ends of each of these observation tools.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the fan would kick in at full speed then, without fail, my macbook pro would freeze. I have microsoft office 16 installed and I use IDEs (pycharm edu and wing101) quite frequently. Other than using a web browser, I don't run too many other demanding programs.

I just ran first aid and attached the screenshot. Thanks.Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 10.28.08 .png

Is there any common set of conditions that will set the fan spinning?

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Rid the MBP of the McAfee AV.  Go to the developers web site for uninstall instructions.

Restart the MBP and see if there is any improvement.

    Ciao.

Well, I need that program to access a secure network, so that would be counter productive for me. I appreciate your help, any other ideas?

You might run an Apple Hardware Test.  It might offer a clue why the fan tamps up:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

You need an antivirus to access a network???

Antivirus on the mac are not needed and cause all sorts of performance and other issues.

Getting rid of this thing would be the first thing I'd do.

Another important consideration is that your hard drive may be slowly failing.

Get ahead of it and do the best upgrade you can to your mac by replacing it with an SSD. It is tantamount to a new mac for about $100.

I replaced the hard drive with an SSD. Absolutely changed the performance of my computer! I did a clean install and downloaded the minimal amount of software I need for school. I didn't install antivirus software...until yesterday. I forgot I needed some antivirus program to access my school's network. Yes, it is a requirement (I installed Sophos this time); you cannot access the network here without it, along with something else called SafeConnect (please see my first post for performance issues).

With the new SSD installed, the computer doesn't crash and I no longer have the balloon. But the symptoms are still there: fan is going at full speed, browser is running extremely slow, and programs have a delayed reaction (clicking the icon in the dock to quit [ultimately force quit] ). It does seem (maybe coincidently?) the antivirus is causing these symptoms, but after I restart the computer, they are no longer there. Any thoughts?

The antivirus is most likely causing it.

It is regrettable that your school requires it.
