DesktopsAs a hobbyist, I think you should seriously consider just moving up to the 2009 or later model. Same form factor except the processors and RAM are on a shelf at the bottom of the cabinet.
They are faster due to some architectural changes, accept more RAM, and still have the PCIe slots that let you add upgrades.

I have a normal day time job but also run a small video editing / tape transfer business so being able to work in HD / 4K would be an advantage. Rendering times now are too slow and Mac Pro failing to burn discs in FCP. When I create a copy of the video - ProRes 422, put that into the time line and then burn a disc it will work!!
I have enough tapes of the children growing up to copy let alone customer work!!
