Q: ios 9.3.5 erased my medical data

I decided to upgrade from iOS 9.3.4 to iOS 9.3.5.

 

During the upgrade process, the installer crashes and fails! Then I reset the device and reload from iTunes. After an hour, it finally completes. I go to update my medical data and find I have lost a year's worth of data!!!

I'm ******! *** would this upgrade erase my data?!?!?!?!!!

    If you're referring to the data in the health app, that is not backed up by iTunes unless you have turned on encryption for the backups. Given the sensitivity of the data in question, this is reasonable. It may also actually be legally required by HIPAA. If you back up to iCloud, those backups are automatically encrypted and the data will be restored from an iCloud backup.

    I don't care. ALL data should be backed up!!!! It should not matter if I back up to iTunes (local PC) and choose not to enable encryption. That's my choice. But when I perform a back up, I EXPECT everything to be backed up!!

    Freaking out about it here isn't going to change anything. You are not talking to Apple. This is a user forum. Do as stedman suggests and tell Apple.

    What you expect or care is irreverent, the reality is you MUST enable encryption to have medical data backed up locally. It is a security measure. Anyway, you are responsible for your own data and failing to do so is your own fault.

     

    Also if encrypted backup is enable, don't forget the password, failing to remember the password, you will not be able to restore from the backup ever.

    You're wasting your time ranting about it here. You are NOT talking to Apple.

    Regarding HIPAA, this is irrelevant. I don't live in the States. Regarding iCloud backup, there is no option to back up medical data alone. I'm not going to pay Apple to backup over 128GB of data for my iPhone.

    Yes you have a choice, you can decide to use or not to use encryption for your backup locally using your computer iTunes.

    The result is:  only encrypted backup contains your medical data.

    You might not be interested in Apple's privacy and security measures, millions of other users including myself are grateful for that.

    iTunes backups

    From your Mac or PC, you can make a backup of your device in iTunes. Syncing your device with your computer isn't the same as making a backup. An iTunes backup includes nearly all of your device's data and settings. An iTunes backup doesn't include:

    • Content from the iTunes and App Stores, or PDFs downloaded directly to iBooks (You can back up this content using Transfer Purchases in iTunes.)
