Do not install cleaners, optimisers, keepers, etc. It will do more harm than good.

I have yet to see any of those programs (MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneMyMac, AdvancedMacCleaner, MegaBackup, etc) to be horrible programs. They seem to cause all sorts of adware on the machine.

Your best option for protection and/or a "cleaning" tool would be Malwarebytes, which is available for free.

In your statement " I do have significant memory taken up in the other category" are you really talking about storage/disk usage and not memory?

Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes. Transfer to an external HDD the files you do not want on your Mac or delete them.

Do not forget to empty trash. Only then is space allocated for additional data.
