Q: Can EMS call while in DND?

Can Emergency Services reach me while my phone is on DND or do I need to add them to my Favorites? If so, how would I be able to add all of the different numbers that they might contact me from?

What do you mean by "Emergency Services"? The police? The fire department? FEMA? You can set DND so that anyone who calls you twice within three minutes rings trough. Other than that, you'd need to add any numbers you want to reach you to Favorites and then set DND to allow Favorites.

Emergency Alerts will override DND. You can turn them on in Settings>Notifications at the very bottom.

While on DND, you can set it up so a second call from the same number within 3 minutes will be allowed to ring.

Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Beyond that, there's no specific setting to allow EMS specific numbers through while on DND.

Well, I just want any kind of EMS to be able to ring through to me at night when I have my DND on in case of an emergency. Would they try twice?

I use the DND to turn off all the annoying notifications that ding all night. I DO have Emergency ALERTS set to on, but that's different...

    Thanks- I appreciate your feedback.

If you have reason to believe they would be calling you (sounds like a very unusual situation), then yes, you need to leave DND turned off.

The only time in my life that I ever had the police call me in the middle of the night was to tell me that the pounding on my front door was the police, not drunks from the bar next door and I should go answer the door.

LOL. Yes, I could see where that would be important to know!

I don't think this is such an unusual thing- I have a teenager and, separately a widowed mom. I just want EMS to be able to get through to me if God forbid there was an accident or something. If I turn DND off altogether, how else can I get the stupid phone to stop dinging me all night?

Turned out that what the cops wanted at my door wasn't really that important. But back to your issue.

If, for some reason, a police officer or EMT or similar called you, they would most likely be calling you from a cell phone. There's no way for the phone to know that whoever is calling you is a cop. And there's no way you can know all those peoples' numbers to put them in your Favorites.

Buy a "silent" ringtone from the iTunes store. At night, change the default email, text, etc tones to "silent".
