Q: Mail not displayed correctly, then app crashes

I've had an annoying and persistent problem with Mail for months, where it does not display messages correctly and subsequently become unresponsive requiring force-quit and relaunch, plus maybe several computer re-starts. Here's what happens :

I suddenly notice that, although messages are listed in message-list column, when highlighted, the individual message content does not appear in the column to the right  (in non-classic layout).  There is just white-space (although they do become visible individually in a separate window when you double-click a message in the list).

Soon after this, Mail become unresponsive, requiring force-quit. Sometimes, the message “com.apple.iservices-xpcservice (not responding)” has also appeared in the force-quit window.

If the app had been open for a while, it might just become unresponsive without first displaying the message-viewing problem, but after relaunch this problem does immediately occur.

After re-launch, another problem is that often not all messages are listed (not sure if this is associated with an individual email's in-box or its date).

Many force-quits of Mail are sometimes required to clear these problem, and sometimes even several re-starts. After clearing the problem, it might re-occur again soon afterwards, or not again for weeks. It seems to occur randomly.

I'm on Mac Air 10.10.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), Mac OS X (10.5.5), null
