Q: How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I'd like to thank you a lot.

I've been looking around the internet to solve my problem, and your solution has fit perfectly!

My monitor is LG 25UM58. (25" ultrawide)

@genriquediaz:  This worked for me. Thank you for the screenshots! I tried SwitchResX before but it didn't work, but I tried it with your exact settings and it worked. You rock!

I have a 32" LG Ultrawide and MacBook Pro (early 2013).

I my case it was the cable!

I have MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) and just bought the LG 34UM57. I connected my previous monitor with Mini DisplayPort to HDMI and has no problem. I use the same cable with the new LG monitor, but it kept saying the current resolution is 1920 x 1080 60Hz. The recommend resolution is 2560 x 1080 60Hz.

After hours of research and reading all the reply to this post, I bought a new cable (link below) that supports 4K resolution up to UHD 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz. I finally found out that my old cable was for 1920 x 1080 resolution, which is why it kept flashing me that window...the current resolution. This new cable support more than the recommend resolution and is only $15!
