Q: Scanned files and new permissions?

I recently installed an HP multifunction scanner in my office.  I have 4 iMacs on the network(home base ethernet switch/modem if that matters) running el capitan 10.11.  This scanner has a scan to network folder feature and it seems to me that each new scan to the folder I designate, becomes inaccessible to other users/computers on the network.  I've tried multiple folder locations, shared, public, etc and set permissions to everyone, specific users etc but each new document's permissions are restricted only to the admin user.  If I place any other files in these folders permissions are maintained and other users have no issue accessing them, it seems only the scanned items. Its interesting that if I use the HP easy scan application on the iMac to activate the scan and direct it to the folder of my choosing I do not have this problem, only when using the "scan to network" feature on the actual machine.  This setup requires designating the folder path in the hp software.  HP seems a little stumped so far, so I thought I would ask here.

Any ideas?

Ok well after hours and hours and hours I found a solution...pay $20 and download OS X server and propagate the permissions

It could be a problem if the scanned file was created by "nobody" (that said, you modify the permission setting allowing everyone to write to that folder).

I think that HP multifunction scanner has a "scan-to-network-folder" setup interface, which need you to enter some access credentials. Most of the time, you'd like to create a new "ScannerUser" account, and put his credential into the setup. And of course, you also share read write access to this user in your sharing setting.

    Hey Justin,

Thats exactly how I had it setup.  I created a user "Scanner" and used all of those credentials when setting up the "scan to network folder feature."  I was never able to propagate permissions without the OS X Server.  It works perfectly now, so the $20 was worth it.

    Thank you
