Q: How do I change the fonts colours that I add to my movies?

Hi All,

I have a simple question. I have a swag of VHS tapes that I've had since Adam was a boy. I have been working my way through them and converting them to DVDs. That is probably a lot different to what most people use the software for. I  have been using iMovie HD until it was no longer compatible, then Final Cut Express.

Haven't done any for a while and decided that I should start using Final Cut Pro. After a few days fiddling I am at the stage where I am ready to try and edit a movie that I have done before (not taking any risks). The only thing I can't work out is how to change the colour of whatever font I use. So far all I can use is the colour that comes with the template. I want to change them because I use my own back grounds. A white font against a light background is a bit hard to read.

It wasn't hard to get as far as I have done. One of the more polite things said about it when Apple first released it was that it should have been called iMovie HD Pro. I would not disagree with that.

That's it folks, thanks for any help you can give. If there are any manuals that would be useful any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

What keeps me awake at night is that Apple will, as they usually do in situations such as this, just make iDVD incompatible with a new O/S update and I will be stuck.

Many users maintain older systems with a stable combination of legacy software and OS precisely to guard against this possibility. (Not that Apple would purposefully break the application for a new OS release, but rather that iDVD would  suffer collateral damage because it had been deprecated long ago.) For example, I still maintain a separate 10.6 system because it's very happy  running legacy FCS and some older Adobe software. This can be done on a separate partition or on a separate drive…as long as the hardware is compatible with both the old and new OS. What doesn't work is installing an old OS on a machine that shipped with a newer release.

    Interesting Rus,

I actually have an OLD PP4 laptop, it's the last model Apple made before they switched to Intel chips , which only has the System Software on it (10.5.6) plus working versions of iMovie HD and iDVD and not much else. It is not an accident that those two lots oft Software are there. I check it out whenever I think of it. It works perfectly but is very heavy (compared to todays' laptops), and very slow, particularly when booting. The hardest thing though is learning to drive the click bar again.

It has its own drive and I put in the last DVD I had completed a couple of days ago. Worked like a charm. Picture quality was wasn't a bit dodgy though. NOT as good as it is on the iMac but that is only to be expected.

    Cheers,

    UD

    Hi All

The saga continues. I am aware that I use the movie software for different reasons than most people.

Since completing my last project using FCE I decided for educational reasons to repeat the last disc using FCPX.

It was not difficult I must admit. It would be nice if the time line was wider though. When FCPX was first released there was much angst. One of the many comments I read was that it should have been called iMovie HD Pro. If I got stuck it was a case of "What would I do if I was using iMovie". All in all it is good software and was easy to use.

Better than FCE? Predominately. The thing that annoyed me no end however,  was having to re type the chapter details in iDVD. I have decided that with my next project I will put chapter markers in the timeline but instead of typing them in I'll write them down and put them in when get to the iDVD stage. That aspect of FCPX is so stupid and primitive. There is no logical reason that i can see for it. I used the first version of iMovie when it came out with iDVD when Adam was a boy and I never had to do that with iDVD.

I have put the footage for my next project in to FCPX. I don't intend to do anything with it yet. As far as I can tell I have done every thing correctly but the timeline from the first project is still visible. I have been through the help manual reasonably thoroughly but could find nothing to tell me what to do. I did think of just deleting the timeline  but wasn't brave enough. Didn't want to make a hash of anything.

So, if anyone can enlighten me it would be much appreciate it.

Thanks for any help you can give me guys and guyesses,

Some new users actually edit into a clip opened into the Timeline.

Always start a NEW Project then open that not the Timeline then start editing.

    File>New>Project:

Having more than one Project in the Timeline is not possible. Opening another one will not do anything damaging.

As newer ones are opened in the Timeline FCP X remembers them and are Navigable with these arrows:

Click and hold an arrow to view a list for quick access.

Always check for a Clapper Board icon to confirm a Project and not a clip you are editing into.

    Thanks Al,

That seems to have worked okay. I spotted the "Close Library Untitled", selected that and the time line disappeared. I clicked the icon on my HD and it re-appeared so having sorted that out I closed the library again.

One thing I was unable to spot though was what in iDVD is called the "TV Safe area". I forget what it is called in FCE but it is on as you can see in the pic. TV Safe.jpg

It is available in FCPX because I had it on in my first project. Cant find how to turn it on now though.

    Cheers Al,

Pretty much the same in FCP X.

    Use the View menu:
