Q: "to use this library make sure its file permissions are set correctly"

I have all my photos on an external hard drive attached to aperture and when I tried to open aperture I get this message:

"To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly"

 

I tried to repair the permissions by pressing option and command and opening aperture but when I clock on that it shows a small screen that says "checking library" and then nothing happens and it freezes.

 

I recently updated the computer and also unplugged the external hard drive and plugged it back in.

Not sure which one of those started the problem but it was working fine before then.

    Which version of Aperture are you using?  And which version of OS X?

    Is that the full error message?

     

    If you updated to a newer OS X version, the filesystem of your external drive may no longer be compatible. Is the drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and locally mounted?

    If you cannot repair the permissions, try to set the Ignore Ownership flag:

    1. Select this drive in the Finder.
    2. Choose File > Get Info.
    3. In the Info window, find the Sharing & Permissions section. You may need to click the disclosure triangle to see the details for this section.
    4. Click the lock in the lower-right corner of the Info window. Enter an administrator name and password when prompted.
    5. Select the option to Ignore Permissions on this volume (usually selected by default).
    6. Copy your  library to this drive.

    This flag cannot be set on a NAS or on a drive used by Time Machine. But you should not store the Aperture Library on a NAS or a Time Machine volume anyway.
