Q: frozen Photo app on first use after update

As advised i updated to El Capitan....iphoto became Photo....now I can not import New photos from my Nikon...starts the upload....can't tell if pics all uploaded or not, for hours, try to import, just sits and sits and sits.  Have already tried Force Quit once.  Suggestions?? Very frustrating and time consuming......

iPhoto was not replaces by Photos - Photos was added - iPhoto is still in your Applications folder and if you are up to date (version 9.6.1) still works just fine

And Photos works just fine too so you have to tell use details so we can help figure out what is wrong on your system

what exactly happens when you launch Photos? Is it frozen as your headline states or is it hung in a loop as the body implies? Have you migrated your iPhoto library? Is the Nikon new or a camera you perviously used with iPhoto? What model? Are you shooting RAW or JPEG?

Why were you advised and by whom to upgrade to El Captain?
