Q: Running Mac OS X version 10.7.5.  Websites are telling me that Safari browser needs to be updated.  How do I update Safari?  Choosing Apple, Software Updates does not update either the Mac OS X version or Safari.  TY

You have to update your operating system to El Capitan in order to update Safari.  That way you'll be using the most current version, 9.1.  If you don't want to update to El Capitan or can't update to El Capitan, you'll have to download another browser.  My recommendation would be Firefox. 

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite/El Capitan.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

      MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

      OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

      2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)

      8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

So, just to clarify, this means that Safari cannot be independently updated?  I think the answer is: correct.  But I just want to make sure.

I am hesitant to update my OS because I use Adobe CS3 and I can't afford to have it stop working just because I update my system.  However, this is a question/problem for another day.  Currently, I am focused on updating safari, which, by your statement, I probably can't do.  So, now figuring out if updating will cause my CS3 problems has just moved to the top of the stack.

Safari is now tied to the OS and can no longer be updated independently.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive (step 1), then the Partition tab (step 2), and select the partition. Using the /// at the bottom move it up (step 3) until the size box decrease by about 50 GB. Select the newly created space and hit the + button (step 4). Name it something and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format (step 5). Then hit the Apply button(step 6). Download the installer from the App Store and when it starts, point it at the new partition. You might want to make a copy of the installer outside the Applications folder to avoid having to re-download it in the future. Once installed, restart with the option/alt key held down, select the new partition and reboot. Test away.
