Q: I can't get Yosemite.... and I REALLY need it. HELP!

Hi,

So I have a Mac Pro running 10.8.5 and I really need to update to Yosemite. Because I use a lot of Pro Audio software and hardware, I can never run the latest OS X due to instability / incompatibility issues. My Pro Tools HD version still does not support El Capitan at all, so even though the next OS is about to be released, I still can't update to the current version.

I don't have Yosemite in my 'Purchased' list on the App Store, because if I updated to it previously, it would have rendered my system useless. I also have a MacBook Pro which was shipped with Yosemite, but can't work out a way to be able to install that OS on the desktop machine. I even created an external disk using recovery mode, then set that drive as startup disk on the desktop, entered recovery mode to try install across to the desktop, but after I put in my Apple ID at the beginning of install it says 'item temporarily unavailable' or something to that effect.

It took me 15 hours just to make that recovery disk because my internet is so slow here, and I've still got nowhere nearer to getting Yosemite on my Mac Pro. So I'm pulling my hair out here... hoping someone has an answer as to how I can get Yosemite onto my machine?

Would appreciate any ideas people have!

Thanks

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), 6 Core 3.33 24GB RAM

You can try asking at an Apple Store or an authorized Apple repair store.

I kinda had the same issue. I was unable to reinstall Yosemite 10.10 because my Apple ID was never associated with Yosemite. I ended up going into the nearest Apple Store, explained my situation and they were able to install Yosemite free of charge. They even gave me the option of which version of Yosemite I wanted to install via their server; free of charge!

You might want to create a backup on an external hard drive before you walk into the Store.

So far...  it looks like I have two options. Pay $99 and take my tower to a store 50mins drive away and leave it there for 10 days, or pay an extra $120 'priority' fee and it would be ready within 48 hours.

I'm amazed by how convenient Apple makes it for me to simply update an operating system...  it's crazy. After spending around $15K on their hardware in recent years, this is the best experience they can offer? I can't just update it myself online... because that would be insane for a technology company to cater for that wouldn't it?

    It's baffling. I feel like I'm in the 80s'.

Is the Mac Pro signed on with a different Apple ID? If it isn't, then it should be in your Apple ID purchased list, regardless of what computer it is on. Was a different Apple ID assigned to the Mac Pro when it was shipped?

And are you indicating that you do not have an Apple Store nearby? As both Eric and chacho805 posted, if you can get your machine to an Apple Store you can undoubtedly get it installed free of charge.

Your other option is to call Apple Support to see if they can help. Again, if the Mac Pro that was shipped with Yosemite was set up with your Apple ID, then Yosemite should be in your Apple ID Purchased List. So they may be able to help you to get it there: Official Apple Support

    Best of luck,

    Hi Gail,

The Mac Pro tower I want Yosemite on is 6 years old, so didn't come with Yosemite... I do however have a MacBook Pro that came with Yosemite pre-installed. The store nearest to me is an Apple Re-seller and Approved Service Center...  my nearest actual Apple store is over two hours drive away unfortunately. At the stores here in Australia, you can't just walk in for help as far as I'm aware... you have to book and pay for an appointment.

I've done a couple of live chat sessions with Apple support... one advised I'd be able to use the recovery mode to create an external disk to install across to the other machine (which won't work), and the other basically just re-stated that Yosemite is no longer available and that my only option may be to go into a store.

I'm studying full-time, and currently scoring music for a documentary film project (long story, but need to move to Yosemite for this project), so losing a lot of productive time, and being without my machine is far from ideal. I feel like ROCK|ME|HARD PLACE

OK, so sorry - I should have said Macbook Pro to be clearer about my question. The key here is the Apple ID that was used to set up the Macbook Pro. Was it the same Apple ID that you are using on the Mac Pro?

When I got my Macbook Air, it came with Mountain Lion. I still have Mountain Lion in my Purchase History, so the Apple ID that was used to set up your Macbook Pro should have Yosemite in the Purchase History.

If both machines are using the same Apple ID, and Yosemite is not showing up in Purchases, then I would recommend that you talk to Apple Support and let them know that. Because it should be there, and they may be able to fix the issue if that is the specific request.

    Cheers,

Currently working on another potential option after chatting to someone via online store support, and getting put onto a phone number, and then through to a product specialist

Apparently there's no way to get the Yosemite from the MacBook onto my 'purchased' list for d/load, despite both the desktop and macbook being on the same Apple ID.

Workaround we're trying... (finger's crossed), create a disk image of the external Yosemite drive I created in recovery mode from the MacBook. Restore it to an internal drive in the Mac Pro desktop machine... then use migration assistant to bring my files, apps etc over from a time machine backup.

I'm not holding my breath... but it's better than no plan at all, or having no machine for days.

Wish me luck... and I'll let you know how I go, in case others have similar problems.
