Q: Security Update 2016-01 for 10.11.6 deletes extensions?!

Hi,

I just installed Security Update 2016-01 for OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan from the App Store on my MBP 17".  Everything seems to have gone fine; however, some Extensions (-> System Preferences | Extensions) seem to have been deleted.  Specifically, the third-party ownCloud Finder extension and the Today extensions are missing.

On my MBP 13" I installed the same security update without encountering these problems.  There is not much difference between the software on the two machines.  Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac is running on both, but Little Snitch is installed only on the affected machine.

I tried reinstalling the ownCloud desktop client in an effort to get the Finder extension back, but that didn't work.  Neither did downloading the security update from the Apple website and installing it.

Has anybody experienced these problems?  If not, how could I recover at least the Today extensions?  On the machine on which the security update successfully installed Reminders, Calendar, Stocks and Weather are checked, and iTunes, World Clock, Calculator, Social and Find My Friends are not.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 16 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD

I have solved this problem using information found in another thread.  It has to do with El Capitan's System Integrity Protection.  It must be disabled to allow the extensions to load.  Thereafter, it should be enabled again.  The steps:

    1.  Boot into recovery mode by holding down CMD + R while booting until the chime is heard.

    2. Once in recovery mode, open a terminal session.

    3.  Enter the command "csrutil disable".

    4.  Restart the computer.

    5.  Verify that the extension have been loaded.

    6.  Shut down, then once again boot into recovery mode.

    7.  Enter the command "csrutil enable".

    8.  Restart the computer.

I don't know why one MBP stumbled over SIP while the other apparently did not, but the above steps seem to solve the problem.
