I can confirm that skyborndancer's solution does in fact work, at least on a MacBook Pro 9,1 with an OWC DiskDoubler and two internal hard drives. Many thanks to skyborndancer for posting very clear instruction.

    [UPDATE]

One thing I have noticed, after performing the update, is that I now hear my MacBook Pro performing a hard disk access every few seconds, which is a little annoying. At first, I thought it was the Apple Superdrive making the noise, but it doesn't sound like it. Is this just a coincidence or does it have something to do with the modification?

Also, what exactly does the mbasd=1 command do?

My internal dvd drive kept spitting out disks after the El Capitan upgrade on 2 Macbook Pros.  Contacted the genius bar and he had me run the first aid program in the disk utilities.  Both Macbooks now have functioning dvd drives.  I don't know if it will work on external drives though.

This is gold, many thanks for posting it!

I got this to work on my MBP 15" 2012 with OWC SSD (No trim).

    Hello

None of the proposed solutions worked for our MacBook Pros (Retina, 15", End 2013) - upgraded to MacOSX 10.11.6 from MacOSX 10.9.5. The solution by modifying the com.apple.Boot.plist file helped only, if SuperDrive was attached to MacBooks before reboot. Unplugging thereafter the SuperDrive and reattaching it returned to non working state.

So I decided to install a fresh install of MacOSX 10.11.6 to a Memory-Card to test for SuperDrive behaviour. On this new MacOSX install the SuperDrive worked as expected (as before upgrading to MacOSX 10.11.6) - unplugging/plugging in several times. So I created a diff report from the System Folder on our MacBook Pro's internal SSD and the the fresh System install on the Memory-Card. The MacBook Pro /System/Library/Extension folder showed a number of additional kext extension not present on the fresh System on the Memory-Card. So I decided to remove them (moved to my desktop folder) and after that, I restarted the MacBook Pro from its internal SSD and the SuperDrive worked again as it should (unplugging/plugging in several times). Here is a list of the additional kext extensions that I have moved out:

    /System/Library/Extensions/CNQL1212_ClassicNotSeize.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/Channel_dPAD.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EPSONUSBPrintClass.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ElmediaPlayer.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EyeTVAfaTechHidBlock.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EyeTVCinergy450AudioBlock.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EyeTVCinergyXSAudioBlock.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EyeTVEmpiaAudioBlock.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/EyeTVVoyagerAudioBlock.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/HuaweiDataCardDriver.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/IceraUSBMassStorageBypass.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NMHuaweiPhonesVTPCDC_106.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NMLGEDriver_106.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NMSamsungDriver_106.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NMSmartplugSCSIDevice_106.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWireless3G.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWirelessFilter.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMControl.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWirelessUSBCDCECMData.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/Option72.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/OptionHS.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/OptionMSD.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/OptionQC.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/PACESupportFamily.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/RIMBBUSB.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/RIMBBVSP.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/RemoteVirtualInterface.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/Terminus.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ZGUSBCDCACMData.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ZGUSBMassStorageFilter.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ZTEUSBCDCACMData.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/ZTEUSBMassStorageFilter.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/cdc.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/cdc_ecm_qmi.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/cdc_ecm_qmi_zg.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/cdc_zg.kext

I guess that the cdec.kext extension may be critical for proper function of the SuperDrive

    best regards,
