Q: Download speeds too slow on new IMac

I just bought the new iMac big boy with all of the RAM, 3TB hard drive etc. When I do a test of the internet speeds I get 57 download and 5 upload which is what I paid for, however when I open a file from my google email that is 1.2mb it takes about 10 sec to download. I downloaded Abode Acrobat which was a 26 mb file and it took 15 min. Is there a setting that I need to change to allow downloads to go faster or? Im new to Mac and this was not a problem with my windows pc with the same router and internet?

Please help thanks

    Hi ssjjj555,

First of all, congratulations on the purchase of your new iMac!  I understand you are trying to get the most of the internet connection that you have.  Here are a couple of things you can try:

    • Increase the download speed your internet service provider offers.
57 Mbps is a decent speed, but your experience will be exponentially better if your ISP has a faster package.
    • Make sure your modem/router firmware is updated.
    • An ethernet (wired) connection is always going to be faster than Wi-Fi.
    • Firewall settings and security software (if installed) can slow downloads.
    • If you are using another browser, like Chrome - try using the built in Safari application instead.
    • Check to see if you have any extensions in Safari.

Here are a few resources regarding internet connectivity that may help:

Solutions for connecting to the Internet, setting up a small network, and troubleshooting

Use Wireless Diagnostics to help you resolve Wi-Fi issues on your Mac

Install and manage Safari extensions on your Mac

    Turn off or uninstall extensions

    1. Choose Preferences from the Safari menu, then click Extensions.
    2. Select an extension from the list.
    3. Turn off the extension by deselecting the Enable checkbox. If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, click the Uninstall button.

    Have a good day!

Your internet speed is certainly more than suitable for what you are trying to download.  Therefore, my first thoughts would be to test using wired Ethernet (if currently using WiFi) to see if that changes things (if so then you'll know to target a WiFi issue).

Secondly, the most common cause of Mac performance and instability problems is 3rd party antivirus, security tools, firewalls, or any other software that advertises itself as a performance "enhancer", "booster", "scanner", "optimizer", etc.  If you have installed ANY such software on your Mac you should immediately uninstall them fully, then reboot, then try your download test again.
