Q: No partition possible for reinstallation of El Capitan

I have major problems on both OS X and win 7 (imac 2009).

The computer is unusable, especially the keyboard. This follows an update to El Capitan a couple of weeks ago.

The computer does not boot with any keys (keyboard problems), the only start up disk available is bootcamp, but OS X and recovery disks are visible on win 7 in bootcamp console.

I tried reinstalling El Capitan but no disks are available for partition, so i'm blocked (needs to be GUID which I don't have).

I have saved all files and would really like to restore systems. However, the dvd is not working (ejects) for both OSX installation DVD or win 7 iso burnt dvd.

I'm wondering if the this is repairable ? Thanks in adavnce for any advice.

You have a corrupted GPT. Use Control+C to quit Gdisk, run it again, and choose 2 - GPT. Post the output of the 'p' (print) command. It may be a little simpler to reuse what you already have in the GPT.

Your first three partition entries match. We are going to delete entry 40 and re-create it as entry 5 and check if there are any valid Windows files that you can see in Finder from the OSX side before we make further changes. Use the following commands at the prompt where you are on now.

    d (delete)

    40 (Entry 40)

    n (new)

    5 (Partition 5)

    1318635296 (Start)

    1953525134 (End)

    0700

    p

    w

    y

Reboot and test OSX and check if you can see any Windows files in disk0s5.

If you can boot into Windows, and install GPT Fdisk (it has a Windows version), we can correct the GPT from that OS. You download the Windows version from the same location as the OSX version.

In the screen shot(s), I have the GDisk binaries in the downloads folder on Windows. You will need to run gdisk64.exe from a Admin CMD window. 0: indicates the first disk to Gdisk in Windows. Here is an example window.
