Q: Cannot be partitioned?

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows 10 on my late-2013 Macbook Pro retina. I am able to create the install drive and download the software, but my computer gives an error when I try to use bootcamp to create a partition. I'm trying to give Windows 32GB of my 512GB SSD. I tried using Disk Utility first aid, but that's hasn't helped either.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Does BC Assistant create the USB Installer successfully? 32GB is too small for a working W10 installation.

From How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support,

    • At least 55 GB of free disk space on your startup drive

If it does not let you use more than 32GB for Windows, you have a different issue.

No, it will only let me partition up to 36GB

No, no errors. I was able to attempt a 55GB partition, but it still could not be completed.

Can you boot into Internet Recovery (not Local Recovery) and run Utilities -> Terminal and execute the following command

    diskutil repairDisk disk0

Use Command+C (Copy) to copy the output, quit Terminal, start Safari, and Command+V (Paste) as a reply on this discussion.  If you are asked about the EFI Partition, enter 'y' (or 'yes').

I assume BC Assistant failed in creating the partition.

    1. Run Applications -> Utilities -> Console logs and in the top right hand search box, type 'disk' and search. Look for any errors.

    2. As a test, in Disk Utility, try to create a FAT32 partition of the size you want Windows to be. Do you get any errors?

This should not be required, but as a test, boot into Internet Recovery, and run the following command

    diskutil cs revert A35D09C8-177A-46C5-B870-B27114E49791

This will make your disk a regular HFS+ partition. Now run BCA and retry. If it still fails, you have a fragmented disk.

Please see the steps in Re: failed windows 8.1 installation through bootcamp to backup/erase/restore your OS X partition and then run BCA and try again.

The link allows you to backup/erase/restore OS X only. It is not supported for Windows backup/restore.
