    Is the hard drive formatted for Apple.  If so you should be able to right click on the item you want to transfer and click on copy, then go to your hard drive and right click and go paste.

    He hasn't made the item yet. He's trying to make it the external drive.

    I had a similar problem, exporting files from a project, and spent a LONG time figuring this out.

     

    No permission from multiple HDs that I had permission for.

     

    There was a "?" in one of the tracks names. Geez....like a unix problem from 1968 (or whever Unix was invented) still causing problems today...

    If you have a new drive you might have to set up its permissions (I *think* you can do this while FCPX is running).

     

    In the Finder, right click on the troublesome drive and Get Info from the menu. All the way down at the bottom of the Get Info window is Sharing & Permissions. You have to unlock it and it will require your administrative password to unlock. Once it's unlocked, you can select the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option then relock it. You should be able to write to it then.
