Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with playing audio from your iPhone to a stereo is not what you expect.
If I understand correctly, you are unable to play music from various sources to a stereo via USB to Lightning cable. You could try the USB related steps from this article:
Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo
If those steps don’t resolve the issue, you can try to see if this is network related by saving music to your iPhone and then view only music stored on your iPhone and see if the same issue occurs:

This didn't solve my problem. My iPhone continues to skip track randomly when I have the iPhone connected with USB. I have tested different USB-cables - same problem.
But I don't have this problem if I use the phone not connected with USB, for example using Spotify with headphones, or streaming music using bluetooth.

Sep 4, 2016 7:09 AM in response to Erik Strömbergby becky_s22,Thanks for that additional info. You may need to check with the maker of the stereo if there are available firmware/software updates to resolve this issue, as it sounds like you have narrowed this issue down to playback over USB.
