Q: No partition possible for reinstallation of El Capitan

I have major problems on both OS X and win 7 (imac 2009).

The computer is unusable, especially the keyboard. This follows an update to El Capitan a couple of weeks ago.

The computer does not boot with any keys (keyboard problems), the only start up disk available is bootcamp, but OS X and recovery disks are visible on win 7 in bootcamp console.

I tried reinstalling El Capitan but no disks are available for partition, so i'm blocked (needs to be GUID which I don't have).

I have saved all files and would really like to restore systems. However, the dvd is not working (ejects) for both OSX installation DVD or win 7 iso burnt dvd.

I'm wondering if the this is repairable ? Thanks in adavnce for any advice.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

In Start menu choose CMD Window with Admin rights, go to the location where gdisk64.exe is located and run

    gdisk64.exe 0:

If you get prompted choose '2 - GPT'. Inside gdisk, the steps are identical (delete entry 40, create a new entry 5,...).

Be very careful, if the GPT is modified and written, Windows may not boot, so you get only one shot. After the 'y' to confirm. We need to recheck the MBR, before we reboot, otherwise neither OS will work.

If you are running 32-bit Windows use the gdisk32.exe otherwise use gdisk64.exe.

my window is not showing like yours?

    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.1

Type device filename, or press <Enter> to exit: GDISK32.EXE
NOTE: Write test failed with error number 6. It will be impossible to save
changes to this disk's partition table!

    Partition table scan:
      MBR: not present
      BSD: not present
      APM: not present
      GPT: not present

    Creating new GPT entries.
    ************************************************************************
Most versions of Windows cannot boot from a GPT disk except on a UEFI-based
computer, and most varieties prior to Vista cannot read GPT disks. Therefore,
you should exit now unless you understand the implications of converting MBR
to GPT or creating a new GPT disk layout!

Are you SURE you want to continue? (Y/N): Y

    Hello again,

I managed to follow procedure in cmd window. Step by step including "d" + changes to partition. I then pressed "Y" to confirm and the computer shut down !

As you predicted, the black screen shows "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

I suppose I should have waited before the "Y" command, sorry ! I tried following instructions very carefully.

Did you run only these commands

    d (delete)

    40 (Entry 40)

    n (new)

    5 (Partition 5)

    1318635296 (Start)

    1953525134 (End)

    0700

    p

    w

    y

or did you execute anything else? If only these were executed, run the following two procedures....

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Reboot and hold Alt/Option key and check what are the available options. If you see OS X, select and test.

Ok thanks. I have done that and tried to reboot. Not sure the NVRAM worked properly as the mac starts up to HD mac disk without booting. I don't see any options to boot into windows 7.

OS X Bootability is there, so we can still fix it. The NVRAM reset worked, otherwise you would see a No Boot device Windows error.

    Please post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

First and foremost, shutdown your Mac, power it backup and hold Command+R on your keyboard. Do you see a Recovery Console? If you see a Recovery Console, click on Utilities -> Terminal and run

    csrutil status

    csrutil disable

    csrutil status

    and post the output.

Second, your GPT5 entry is incorrect. Your old MBR and the new GPT entries do not match, which we need to correct.

Excellent. Please reboot the Mac and boot normally. In Terminal, please run csrutil status and post the output.

You confirmed two things. Local Recovery works, and we can update GPT and MBR.
