App purchases are t necessary for movies, but you'll need to purchase, rent or subscribe to a movie(s)

YOu just need a TV with an HDMI input.

the apps that does not rely on your having some sort of subscription or paying for usage would likely have adds such as youtube, the providers needs to make money one way or another I guess
