Q: Help moving videos from iPhone photo sharing to icloud

I have several videos on my iPhone 5s (latest IOS) that have been shared by my family with me. I'm trying to free up space on my iphone and would like to remove them and send to my icloud photo account. How can I accomplish this?

    Hi

Photos and videos that are shared with you by others via iCloud Photo Sharing remain in iCloud unless you have chosen to save them to your device. For more information about how iCloud Photo Sharing works, see this support article:

In respect of content that is stored on your iPhone, the following support article explains the difference between device storage (on your iPhone) and iCloud storage and the relationship between them (you would not move photos or videos off one and onto the other to free up space):

Finally, this article explains how iCloud Photo Library can be used in conjunction with your iPhone, including how Optimize Storage enables you to keep smaller, space-saving photos and videos on your iPhone while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud:

Jonathan pretty much covered the ground. One thing that should be clear is that photos and videos stored in iCloud will also be stored on all devices logged in to iCloud, so there is no way to remove them from your phone without deleting them from iCloud, which will also remove them all other devices sharing the iCloud photo library. If you want photos saved somewhere but not using storage on your phone you need a different solution that keeps the photos in cloud storage somewhere, but only displays them on the phone when you want to by downloading them. There are several 3rd party solutions that do this:

    • Dropbox
    • Google Photos
    • upthere.com
    • Shutterfly

There are quite a few more, but one of these will do what you need. Google Photos is the most powerful, because not only does it store your photos, but it groups by facial recognition, automatically creates panoramas, slide shows, and movies from your still photos, Reminds you through photos of what you were doing in past years on the current date and makes it easy to share photos with friends and family. If you aren't allergic to Google having its fingers in everything you do it's probably the most comprehensive solution.

Upthere is a startup founded by former Apple managers and developers. In addition to storing your photos and videos, it also stores copies of your music. It doesn't do automatic albums like Google does, but it has tools for you to organize and share photos. And, unlike Google, it has a very strict privacy policy and does not look at or use your content for marketing purposes. And it stores all content using strong encryption.
