Q: how to know with which account was purchased an app installed on mac OS X 10.8?

Hi there,

I have a computer with several accounts, and behind several real users, but now all gone.

Now I want to update GarageBand, but this is impossible as it says me the app was bought/downloaded with another account.

- I've tried apple+I on the icon of the application, but this is not among the information provided there.

- I've looked into iTunes as seen on a post, but when clicking on the App icon, it just doesn't gives me the apps I have on the computer.

- I've tried to look at the installation details of garageband in System Info -> Installation, but this is not there neither...

- Inside GarageBand there is a "Register GarageBand" that opens a browser at the address register.apple.com, but the page is not answering,

pfffff....

I wish I could just delete it and install it again with my current iTunes account, but I'm sure this is the kind of app you can't uninstall as it comes with the computer and is an apple top software, etc etc.

Any idea?

Now I want to update GarageBand,

Which version of GarageBand do you have installed, and which version do you want to update to?

It will depend in the version you are using, how you can update it.

But check, if you own an AppStore version of GarageBand at all.

    • Launch the Mac AppStore, then sign in with the AppleID you used, when you first set up the computer.
    • Now open the Purchases tab of the AppStore - the fourth tab, not the Updates tab.
    • Now scroll through your purchases history. Does GarageBand appear among your past purchases?  Then you can reinstall it from that tab, if you move the currently installed version to the Trash (but do not empty the Trash, so you can restore it).  Check the Purchases history for all AppleIDs you remember.

Hi Léonie, thanks for trying to help me.

I'm running GarageBand 10.0.3 and want to update to 10.1.2.

I own two iTunes account, but GB does not appear among the purchases I did with them

If you read carefully my post, you'll see my problem is that I don't know which account was used to download GB (I suspect this is from an account of someone who was using the mac before me, and the previous accounts have been removed from the computer).

So back to my basic question: how to know with which account an App was purchased based on the information available on the file system/the app (not based on the AppStore)?

By the way, I also tried to put GB in the trash, the appStore program then proposes me to *buy* GB anew (that would be version 10.1.2 I guess), so it's not exactly as *updating* the current version

Buying it again I could have the newer version, but from the description it doesn't seem to have as many Amps

I have in the current version (even in Amp designer)....Are there separate packs of amps and effects that can be purchased separately from GB?

I read it carefully   - perhaps my reply has been to cryptic. There is no way to see the account you purchased an AppStore item with,  probably for privacy reasons to protect the AppleID of the owner.  If you install software on a computer that is used by several people, not necessary friends and family, you will not want that the other users can see your AppleID. I frequently have to install software on the computers in our laboratory, and many students are using these macs.

That is why I suggested to try all your AppleIDs and check your Purchases history at the AppStore for all your accounts. You can only reinstall GarageBand, if you own it yourself.  Otherwise you will have to ask the previous users on your Mac and find out who accepted GarageBand to his or her AppleID or purchase it yourself.

I forgot to mention that the purchase might be hidden. See this document:   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202320

By the way, I also tried to put GB in the trash, the appStore program then proposes me to *buy* GB anew (that would be version 10.1.2 I guess), so it's not exactly as *updating* the current version

That will happen, if the AppleID is different from the AppleID that has been used, when the Mac has originally been set up, or if you moved to a different country and are trying to reinstall from a different AppStore. Did you change the country of your AppleID?

In some cases the Appstore recognized that GarageBand had already been installed and the purchase was free.

The current update should have as many amps as the version you are currently running.
