Q: No partition possible for reinstallation of El Capitan

I have major problems on both OS X and win 7 (imac 2009).

The computer is unusable, especially the keyboard. This follows an update to El Capitan a couple of weeks ago.

The computer does not boot with any keys (keyboard problems), the only start up disk available is bootcamp, but OS X and recovery disks are visible on win 7 in bootcamp console.

I tried reinstalling El Capitan but no disks are available for partition, so i'm blocked (needs to be GUID which I don't have).

I have saved all files and would really like to restore systems. However, the dvd is not working (ejects) for both OSX installation DVD or win 7 iso burnt dvd.

I'm wondering if the this is repairable ? Thanks in adavnce for any advice.

Since you have five GPT entries, we need to create a special MBR.

Can you use the steps in Re: [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition as a reference? The only challenge due to such an MBR is that you will lose OS X volume readability from the Windows side.

Once Windows works correctly, we can address the small 100MB partition and see if it can be absorbed in Windows or left alone.

If the 100MB can be absorbed into Windows,

    1. You will need to recreate the MBR again, and,

    2. You will regain readability to OS X partition from Windows.

You need Startup Repair using bootrec.exe and command prompt. Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392 . You also get to test booting from W7 installer.

If I understand correctly, you want me to boot into windows, but I can't as the black screen as decribed before gives me no options. My windows DVD disc gets ejected after 30 secs.

Can I use bootrec.exe or something else on OS X to to enable boot to windows ?

If you reboot your Mac and use Alt/Option key, and then insert your W7 DVD, is it still rejected?

If yes, do you have blank DVD media? You can download the official ISO - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 - and burn it to a blank DVD and try it.

If you can get the DVD to stay, then use System Preferences -> Startup Disk, choose the internal Windows, rather than the DVD, and it should automatically boot from the DVD and then you can choose Command Prompt or Startup Repair as appropriate.

I finally managed to burn a ISO DVD. It stays in the optimal drive and shows on os x desktop, some good news.

However, I've tried booting to windows but nothing, it eventually ejects the dvd and goes to the same black screen.

Shutdown your Mac with the DVD in the Optical drive, boot and hold Alt/Option key, and then select the Windows icon from DVD and check if the Windows installer comes up.
