Q: bootcamp freezes during windows 7 install

I'm running a mid 2011 iMac and went to install win 7 as this model is not compatible with win 10. But after downloading necessary drivers, partitioning hard drive, and starting install the iMac restarts to a black screen with a blinking cursor. Nothing else happens so I restarted it. This time holding option key to choose boot disk. Besides my Mac HD, 2 DVD boots are available. One says windows one says boot. If I click on "windows" we go back to black screen with cursor. If I click on "boot" screen freezes completely...? I've tried different windows ISO's. I've reset pram. I've loaded iso to USB. Always the same issue. I've recently needed windows for work and was hoping this would be easy.

Please help. G

You need to use Windows icon. Can you confirm that you are using a physical DVD to install Windows? Is there any other external storage that is connected to the Mac when you run the installer?

Yes Im using a physical DVD. Tried a USB after DVD failed. Only other drive connected is the flash drive that bootcamp loads windows drivers to.

As per usual the dvd drive on the iMac doesn't work so I'm using a soniq external dvd drive connected through usb... There is two connections on the back of dvd. One mini usb to usb and one power to usb. its seems to work regardless of what is plugged in (one or both). Could this be an issue?

    Thanks for your time

On Macs with built-in Optical drives, external drives will not work. Can you play Audio CDs/Video DVDs on the internal Optical drive?

From http://xvi.rpc1.free.fr/ , download DVD Info X 3 utility. If you run it, you will see a display similar to the following...
