Q: Yosemite Mail and Gmail spam folder

I'm pretty good with computers but this has me completely confused.  I have multiple Gmail accounts in OS X Mail.  One of them has suddenly become a spam target so I'm trying to figure out how to show the gmail Spam folder in Mail. Honestly, things are so jumbled up that I can't even begin to explain what's going on.  Is there a site that shows how to configure gmail for OS X Mail that includes the gmail spam folder to be visible in Mail?  Everything I've found shows basic setup but doesn't dig into the details of spam folders, etc...

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

GMail online web page > Settings > Labels > Spam> check "show in IMAP" box.

That was already selected.  Turns out the the trick was in preferences to unselect the option to store junk mail on the server.  Not intuitive at all.

    Hello ! Roscoe 17

So you are concerned about junk mails settings / filtering  in your IMAP account . i would try to give some suggestion hope so that settings could be set in a proper way .

Please open mail app & mail preferences , in mail box behaviors select the box store junk messages on the server and Click on drop down arrows to choose delete junk messages as one day old , one week or one month .

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 11.54.55 AM.png

If you uncheck the box mail will treat all mails coming in inbox , as junk and they will be stored on server itself .By checking the box junk mails will be automatically deleted from the server what ever the settings you choose say one week , one day or a month .

I found good articles please read them : Mail (Yosemite): Reduce junk mail in your inbox

: Mail (Yosemite): Junk Mail preferences

: Mail (Yosemite): Mailbox Behaviors preferences

    BEST WISHES ,

                               Thanks

That wasn't my experience.  Before I created filters to prevent emails from going to spam because I got to many real emails sent there by mistake.  They all poured into my inbox.  When I removed the filters (to the gmail spam filter do it's thing) they went into the gmail spam folder but did not appear in Mail.  Others leaked through the gmail filters and ended up in junk folders.  There was no discernible pattern and none of it made any sense.  I had to back to browser gmail to scan the spam and find the random useful ones.

I unchecked the box and they ALL began appearing in a SPAM folder within the respective mailbox in Mail.  I then collect them all in a smart mailbox where they can then be reviewed and then deleted.

Thats great , i also created a smart folder in my machine for example i am getting spam mails that are having malicious contents or the person is continuously sending mails and you don't want to open that mails because by clicking on that link might get malware in the system .

So , if rule is created for that particular mail id all mails will go in the  smart mail box .it is also useful if you don't want some important mails not to be received in your inbox .

Thats why it is called smart mail box .

    cheers !

So this is still kicking my butt.  By unselecting the box to store junk messages on the server, the emails that downloaded to Mail (yay!) weren't connected via imap anymore (boo!).  So I reelected those boxes and the "spam" folders in each mailbox went away.

How do I show the spam in Mail yet keep them "connected" to the Gmail server so if I delete them in one place they are deleted everywhere (I have multiple devices all connected to the same accounts, so this is a critical need for me).

If you are talking about normal IMAP account , i mean to say not mail box i'll keep settings as per screen shot .

You can change in junk :  delete junk as one week , or month , in trash delete as one day old as per your choice , please click on drop down arrows .

So my junk settings are the same as yours.  New junk mail appears in the Gmail (browser) in the "Spam" folder and it matches the OS X Mail folder "Trash".  Except they are not imap connected; emptying the OS X Mail "Trash" folder via the "erase junk mail" option clears them from OS X but not from the Gmail (browser) "Spam" folder.  I haven't even looked to see what happens on my iOS devices yet.  There has to be a way here.

I've just now started digging into "trash" vs "archive" vs "All Mail" and that's making my head hurt even worse.  Personally, I'm not a fan of gmail's concept of "archiving" deleted mail by moving to to all mail.  When I delete something, I want it gone.  If I need to hang onto it, I'll label it (by moving to the appropriate OS X mail folder).

Continuing on with my testing (been doing this all day to look for patterns):

       1) Drafts: (Note: OS X preferences set to store on server) If I create an email in OS X Mail then close it before sending, Mail prompts if I want to save it (yes).  It appears in the Drafts folder in both OS X and in Gmail (browser)...goodness.  However, if I similarly create an email in Gmail (Browser) and cancel out, it appears in Gmail Drafts folder but not in OS X Mail.  Also note that deleting a draft in Gmail that I created in OS X does delete the email in OS X.  Very inconsistent behavior. (I know, shocking...) (and yes, "Show in IMAP" is selected for the Drafts folder)

       2) Trash: (OS X preferences set to move deleted message to the trash folder and to store on server).  "Trashing" an email from either OS X Mail or Gmail (browser) is sometimes but not always properly reflected in the other systems trash (eventually).  Permanently deleting and email from either trash folders does not appear to ever be properly reflected in the other. (and yes, "Show in IMAP" is selected for the Trash folder)

       3) Junk/Spam: (Note: OS X preferences set to store on server)  Junk mail seems to be taking a break right now so I haven't been able to test it lately, no reason to think it's gotten better than I described before i.e new spam shows up in both systems but deleting them does not)
