b) Backup up you data anyway. Murphy's Law says if something bad can happen it will. You cannot control the hardware's behavior, you cannot control the electric company, you cannot control lightening, fire, flood, etc...
c) El Capitan should not make your system slow. But if you have 3rd party additions that are not playing nice with El Capitan, that could be a problem. You might also be memory starved.
