Q: Measure Calorie Burn when using workout

Hi There

The question I have is will your apple watch measure a different calorie burn rate for walking the same distance in the same time when doing so using the workout app as opposed to not using the workout app?

The reason for the question is that I read by using the workout app, apple watch switches on the relevant sensors. Does this mean that these additional motions sensors are normally off and if so would that affect the accuracy of measuring calories burnt during an exercise?

Regards

    Hi

Yes - tracking an Outdoor Walk, for example, via the Workout app may result in a more accurate estimation of your Active Calories burned during that activity.

When you track an activity using the Workout app and specify an activity type, your watch uses the most appropriate sensors and data sources to estimate the results of that workout.

For example, when recording an Outdoor Walk:

    • If you also take your iPhone along (with Location Services and Bluetooth enabled), your watch can access GPS data from the iPhone when estimating pace and distance.
    • If you do not take your iPhone along, the watch relies on data from the built-in accelerometer when estimating pace and distance.
    • Data from the heart rate sensor is used when estimating Active Calories, including calculations that are tailored to that specified activity type.

Calibrating your watch also helps to improve the accuracy of various estimations made by the Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch (including for resetting any existing calibration data and starting afresh) are available via the link below. Estimations of results also depend on your personal information. To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch tab > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

    Hi

Thank you for the info it was helpful. Just an add on question. Would there be a difference in the accuracy of the watch measuring calorie burn rate if you select other exercise as opposed to selecting outdoor run for example? The reason I'm asking this is let's say my fitness routine consists of mainly weights training but also a cycling and incline walk cardio portion would it be necessary to track the walk and cycling as indoor walk and cycling exercises separately or can I track the entire session as other and then still get accurate results?

    Regards

    Andre

    Hi Andre

If you record the entire workout as "Other", your Active Calories will be estimated based on the equivalent of a brisk walk or your heart rate, whichever is higher at any given stage.

When recording specific activity types, calorie calculations are tailored to those activities, so are more accurate.

Whether or not you wish to split the activities into separate workouts is a matter of personal preference. You may prefer convenience (record it all under one workout, choosing "Other") over accuracy, for example.

Note also that workouts recorded via "Other" credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout, whereas Exercise is only credited under the other activity categories for each full minute during which your activity is deemed to be at least as intensive as a brisk walk.

    Hi there

Thank you for the answer. I've tried it and have it makes more sense to just track my entire workout under 'Other'.

One thing that I did pick up and which I hope you can perhaps explain to me. If I'm not busy tracking an excercise and just sitting on the couch for 10 minutes according to the watch I burn around 2 cals. If I track a workout as 'Other' or any other type and just sit on the couch for 10 minutes (not exercising) I clock around 25 cals. Why would the watch think I'm burnig active calories if I'm just sitting on the couch?

    Regards

    Andre

    Hi there

Can this also be said for the other type of workouts such as outdoor walk or run?

    Regards

    Andre

No - calories for specific activity types are estimated using tailored calculations based on your heart rate.
