Q: Stop videos from auto-playing on web sites like CNN

While browsing CNN it's videos (down)load & play automatically wasting my bandwidth and more importantly my time. Is there an effective way to block this type of behavior with Safari 9.1.2 on my late-2008 MBP? I have installed AdBlock & AdBlock Ultimate with no apparent effect.

I use Safari 9.1.3 on OS X 10.11.6, or Firefox 48.0.1. No extensions. Limited plug-ins.

My choice of news sites is currently a medley of FOX NEWS, USATODAY, or the International New York TImes (formally named the International Herald Tribune). I have links to many other news/finance/business sites that I may visit.

CNN uses several different video players in their embedded code, and so far, I have not been able to gag them. This is server-side nonsense, and the browser may have no control over what CNN pushes at us. One surefire way to stop the imposed videos is to find another news site with informative, responsible, and unbiased news reporting. I have used CNN for a very long while, and the site web content has finally driven me away.
