Q: El Capitan 10.11.6 Security Update 2016-001 Issues #01: DVD Player

Since the latest Security Update 2016-001, the Application "DVD Player" won't start anymore!

 

Macbook Pro 13in Early-2011

    Then I would suggest you erase your drive and reinstall El Capitan from the installer application. Then don't update it with the security updater.

     

    Install El Capitan from Scratch

     

         Backup if possible before continuing.

     

    1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
    3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
    4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
    5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
    6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
    8. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

    "Erase"?!

     

    It sounds I'm gonna have all my HD erased and that I'll need to reinstall everything. Is it?

    Well, that I don't know. But you cannot simply remove a security update. So the alternative is to erase and install then refrain from installing the security update that's causing such problems for you. If you have other computers you also need to do the same thing, then having done it on one you may be able to clone it to each of the other machines using Target Disk Mode or an external backup drive that still has the previous data prior to the security update. Otherwise, you need to do the above suggested procedure.

    Thank you but I can't afford so many hours on risky procedures now.

     

    I guess I should switch back to my old habits. I mean not to install fresh updates from Apple.

     

    I don't use my Mac for fun, but for work.

     

    It's better wait and check the discussions before risking the own computer on fresh updates adventures!

     

    I hope Apple fixes it soon!

    Perhaps it's not the update but your underlying system that's the problem. As for any third-party software you should discuss the issues with their developers. I have installed the update and DVD Player still works. I've had no problems with third-party software I use. But I do know many have had issues with the update, but I have no way of knowing if the problem is with the update or with their systems in which it was installed.

     

    Meanwhile, you might try less time consuming troubleshooting:

     

    Try each of these in order. Test to see if the computer is working properly:

     

    1. Reset the PRAM
    2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
    3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
    4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
    5. Download and Install OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update.
    6. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.

    Bad luck...

    PRAM and SMC haven't solved the issue!

     

    Then, Safe Mode didn't work out! It has crashed my OS. Now I'm recovering it from Time Machine . 26 hours to go, says the utility...

     

    Feeling very regretful about this so called "Security" Update!

     

    So secure that not even the owner is able to snitch on it ...

    I'm afraid that this problem you've run into isn't caused by the security update but by some problems in your underlying OS X installation.
