Q: how to rename songs

I'm looking for a way to rename a large number of my Song names in Itunes to better manage the selection and  playing sequence of a certain group of albums in my IPOD

Right now they are named similar to "Sample Practice lesson for study-Day001", "Sample Practice lesson for study-Day002", ... "Sample Practice lesson for study-DayNNN"

When I see the names in my IPod the names are truncated and I only can see the first couple of words in the name and if I wish to select a certain day I cannot see the complete day number without actually opening that "song" and playing it.

I want to Rename these titles so that the Day# is at the beginning of the Song Title but have not found a way to do this.  I have tried renaming the file names using a file naming app which allows me to change batches of file names by selecting and replacing string patterns but it seems that the Song Title is hardwired into the recording file and when I import them to Itunes, the original song names are retained, even though viewing the song in Finder shows the new file name. (sample new name "Day001-Sample Practice lesson for study")

Can anyone give me a way that I can change the Song names in bulk so that I don't have to manually rename each of the +300 titles that I am working with?

Songs from a generic source may have no internal tags. When such a song is added to iTunes a tag is generated for the song's name from the file name.  If you then rename the file the internal tag does not change.  It is likely this internal tag you are seeing on your iPod.  You need to Get Info on the tracks inside of iTunes and edit the tags.

As observed elsewhere there are a variety of scripts on the Dougscripts site for manipulating tags.  You may in particular wish to look for the one which lets you add tags based on a parsed file name. Also look for one called "albumize selection" which will generate a track number for sequential tracks in a selection.
