Q: Airport Utility doesnt find Wifi

Hello, I have been trying to set up an airport 1088 on el capitan with the usual launcher but when it prompts me to select the wifi network the selection menu is empty. Any Tips?Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 18.19.02.png

What you are trying to do is not officially supported by Apple, so some hiccups are to be expected.

 

If the name of the wireless network that the AirPort Express will "join" does not appear, about all that you can do is try to manually type in the name of the network, choose a type of wireless security (Try WPA/WPA2 Personal) and type in the wireless network password.

 

Another question might also be whether a 9+ year old AirPort Express, which Apple lists as "Obsolete", is still operating correctly......since the average useful life of this version of the Express was about 3-4 years.

 

Yet another question would be whether an Express that is capable of connecting only to a 802.11b or 802.11g wireless will be capable of connecting to a newer 802.11n or 802.11ac wireless network signal, both of which are common these days.

    Thanks Bob! I am usually sceptical when it prompts to type in network and thats why i had given up before. but it worked! I was pretty sure it worked as it was working fine on my wifi network and on yosemite. it was just an el capitan compatibility issue.

     

    But to your point the best question in my opinion is why apple isn't providing support/software for fully functioning hardware like the old airport express. The fix is incredibly simple and it has saved me the extra cost of a new airport express since 5.6.1... years!!

     

    But we know the answer to that...
