Q: No notifications

Hi. I just got a new SE and I installed some apps like Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, Instagram, Whatsapp, Snapchat and I've noticed that I don't get any notifications for them. For Facebook and messenger I need to enter the app for notifications/messages to load, for Whatsapp I sometimes get them when I am on locked screen and just connected to the Internet, for snap and Instagram I never get any. I don't have Do not disturb on, in the notification center I have everything checked On and banner as the type of notification, I am logged in on iTunes/AppStore/iCloud, I have good internet connection wifi and lte, I have background app refresh on. Please help me, because this is really annoying. Thank you.

I am not aware that Background App Refresh has anything to do with Notifications. What troubleshooting have you tried? Have you checked the Mute switch, is it just that you cannot hear notifications, or there is nothing? What troubleshooting have you tried? Standard user troubleshooting includes restart, reset, restore from backup, restore to factory.

IIt's not the sound, there is just nothing. For example, I told my friend now to send me something on messenger and she did but I didn't get a notification that I got a message, the only way I saw the message was when I opened the app and then the message loaded. I tried only restarting.

Okay, but you need to troubleshoot this. What have you done? Restart powers the phone off and back on. If that does not work, then hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and release. The phone will reboot. Test. The next steps if necessary are restore from backup, and restore to factory.

I feel like I jinxed something because as soon as I posted here it stopped working again.

OK, so what I noticed is that when I'm on cellular I get notifications normally, but as soon as I connect to my home wifi, I don't receive any push notifications. So the only way I see I got any new messages or notifications is when I enter the app and it refreshes then, so I practically have to manually refresh everything.

I'm very sorry for bothering you, but this is so frustrating.

That would make me wonder if there is a problem with your device connecting to your home wi-fi and the internet. Do you have cellular data turned on? Have you tested this with the device plugged into power and connected to your wi-fi? When you say you reinstalled the apps, what exactly did you do?

I do not have cellular turned on. When it's plugged in and connected to wifi, I still don't get anything. Although I noticed that I sometimes get WhatsApp messages, but not always and I don't get notifications from other apps although they've been sent at the same time. For reinstalling, I delete an app and install it again.

Does this only happen when you have it on wi-fi and it is not plugged in, or anytime? If the device is not plugged in and you are connected to wi-fi, that wi-fi will go to sleep after a period of inactivity. Why do you have cellular data turned off? Do you not have a cellular plan?

I suggest that you try restoring the device to factory and then test. Since it seems that all the notifications that you are referring to are 3rd party applications, I suggest that you add them one at a time and test after restoring to factory. That way you can see if one works before adding the next. That may allow for figuring out what is causing this problem.

See this support document for restoring your device to factory. Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

    Thank you again.

I noticed that there is no difference when I have it plugged in and when I don't. I have a limit on my cellular data, that's why I have it off sometimes. However, I did test with cellular and wifi both on, and the cellular doesn't affect it in any way, so nothing happens again. What I have noticed is that when I am only on cellular and wifi is off, I do get notifications.

I did a factory reset and tried what you suggested with installing app by app. After the reset, they are worked one by one and all together, I was on wifi and I tried plugged in and plugged off, both worked great. Then I went to sleep with wifi on and plugged in, I woke up to no notifications and now I get none again.

It would seem to me that something about some apps working together has affected this change. I cannot tell you any more, after you getting it to work, how it would have stopped working. My next guess would be to see if someone else comes in here to comment, or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store. I'm going to post a link to this thread in an area where other long time users can see it and ask for assistance.

Does this only occur on your home WiFi network? If so, did you try power cycling your router? Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.
